Wow, this month has felt like two months and I have only reviewed three films… funny that. But no, the truth of the matter is I’ve just been on a massive break, so apologises for the lack of posts over the last month. However, here’s a wrap up of the little July we experienced. All three, seemingly, coming-of-age films: one with two academics, one with a superhero and another with a lion. Interesting, right? Anyway, here’s my ranking of the three films I saw in July 2019.
#3 The Lion King (Kingdom of the Criminally Dull…)
An ambitious reworking of a cinematic classic that only showcases Disney’s abilities to advance spectacular visual effects rather than advance any story concepts or structure.
#2 Booksmart (A CRUSADE!!)
An energetic and stylish return to the day’s of old with entertaining and dramatic explorations of modern youth culture, despite its formulaic motions.
#1 Spider-Man: Far From Home (A CRUSADE!!)
An excellent new chapter in the MCU algorithm, chronicling a fast-paced, effortlessly exciting adventure; surviving minor bumps and creases to showcase Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio at their finest.
