(A24 2019)

There was quite an assortment for this month; some noticeable directors at play here, including Quentin Tarantino, Ari Aster, David Leitch and Makoto Shinkai. And from that assortment we got some real auteurs delivering some real works of art… and, of course, I am talking about the month’s resident Fast & Furious spin-off. But hey, in the spirit of fast cars, let’s cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham or Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt through some the releases of August 2019.

#4 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw [Kingdom of the Criminally Dull…]

An explosive rendition of blockbuster cinema’s dumbest tropes which is half charming and half ridiculously brain dead.

#3 Weathering With You [A CRUSADE!!]

A pristinely animated gem from Makoto Shinkai that may not meet the heights of his previous work, but exhibits enough charm to fulfil.

#2 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood [A CRUSADE!!]

A stylistic cruise through a time period of passionate craft, that takes audiences deep into the ideals of one Quentin Tarantino, at the risk of some bumpy roads.

#1 Midsommar [Lost Art]

A beautiful, dark, twisted fantasy, meditating on the great rituals of life such as the processing of misery and grief in remarkable fashion.
